A commitment to equine
nutrition technology...

With 25 years’ experience in equine nutrition, Dr. David Williams applies the same expertise in nutrition technology at Melrose Stable that he uses in developing new products as owner of Producer Feeds Company in Louisville. His experiences in consulting with farms in Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, and Ohio, have given him a unique perspective.

“I experience everything from horses being fed cow feed to owners wasting large sums of money on duplicate and unwarranted supplements, often resulting in nutrient excesses being imposed on the horses,” states Dr. Williams.

Typically, the owner of a horse has no idea about the nutrition program at the farm where it’s boarded. Some boarding farm managers, especially those who regard “feed” as a cost item to be kept to a minimum, use feed that is poor nutritionally. This is unfortunate for the horses and their owners, who are often disappointed in the number of boarding days to breeding, conception rate, embryonic mortality, abortions, weak or dead foals at birth, incidence of developmental orthopedic disease, yearling weight and height. Poor nutrition compromises the ability of a saddlebred or any horse to stay sound as an equine athlete.

At Melrose Stable the most technologically advanced nutritional products are used under Dr. Williams’ direction. Grain products are formulated according to the specific needs of the different groups of horses on the farm including:

• pregnant mares
• lactating mares
• foals 3 to 6 months of age needing creep feed
• breeding stallions
• weanlings
• sales prep yearlings
• retired show horses, ponies, or geriatric special needs

Our basal grain concentrate is a 7% fat (sourced from soybean oil), 14% protein oat and beet pulp-based textured feed with protein, minerals and vitamins provided through a “balancer” pellet. Digestible energy requirements are met by formulating for prececal starch digestion and utilizing fermentable fibers (beet pulp and soy hulls) and corn oil.

Copper, zinc, manganese and iron nutrients are supplemented from a unique source whereby the nutrient element is chemically bonded to an amino acid (proteinated) to enhance absorption into the bloodstream.

In 2004, a new source of vitamin E became available (d-alpha tocopherol acetate) which has been proven to be 300% more effective in elevating blood vitamin E levels than the standard (and less expensive) vitamin E supplement used routinely in feed manufacturing. Melrose Stable uses only feed containing the new and better source of vitamin E that is so important in reproduction and foal health.

Also, in 2004, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the use of organic selenium in equine nutrition. While the organic form is much more expensive than the mineral source (sodium selenite), organic selenium is significantly more digestible and much safer for the horse than sodium selenite. Selenium and vitamin E function in synergy to stimulate the immune system and optimize reproduction and foal vitality.

In addition to the most advanced technologies in equine nutrition, Melrose Stable is committed to feeding grain twice daily, seven days a week to all horses on the farm. Three or more grain feedings per day are employed as needed.

Expertise in equine nutrition provides economic benefit to our customers and is another element in our COMMITMENT to quality care and exceptional service.
